The marcher lordship ceased to function after the passing of the Laws in Wales Act 1536, when it was merged into the new county of Glamorgan. However, the Somerset family have remained as nominal lords of Gower, their main title being Earl of Worcester (to 1642), Marquess of Worcester (1642-1682) and Duke of Beaufort (since 1682). The dukes of Beaufort remain substantial land owners in the area.
