User:Vexald/Sandbox/Exeter Cathedral: Devon Boroughs window

Revision as of 17:45, 15 April 2026 by Vexald (talk | contribs)

The ?th window on the south side of the cathedral nave was glazed in its present form in about 1950, and contains the coats of arms of the ten places (other than Exeter) which were designated as boroughs at that time. Unusually for arms in the cathedral, these include full achievements, i.e. with crests, supporters and mottoes, rather than only shields.

Table of arms

The arms are listed in order left to right, bottom row first.

1 Athelstan (c.894-939), King of the Anglo-Saxons 924-927, King of the English 927-939.

Blazon: Gules, an orb Or.[1]

Athelstan was king when the first church was built on the cathedral site. He pre-dated heraldry, so arms are later attributions.

  1. Athestan's attributed arms usually include a cross on the orb and have a field divided per saltire Gules and Azure.
